Amber rings: reachable nodes, grouped at country label points — not exact node locations.

Node snapshot: 2026-09-24 20:41:01.000 UTC. Checking for an update…

Policy colours are editorial summaries of cited rules, not legal advice or a complete regulatory score. Unreviewed countries stay grey.

WHAT THE MAP ACTUALLY MEASURES

Reachable nodes are not Bitcoin owners.

How many Bitcoin nodes are in each country?

The node layer aggregates the public BTC Nodes crawler snapshot. It counts reachable nodes whose IP location can be assigned to a country. Nodes behind NAT, offline nodes and other undiscovered nodes are outside its reach. Hosting locations, VPNs and geolocation errors can distort the picture.

Country percentages use located nodes as their denominator. Tor, I2P and other unlocated nodes remain in the network total but are not assigned to invented countries. Our server checks for a newer source snapshot at most once every six hours; its actual timestamp stays visible. A failed update preserves the last snapshot with a delay notice.

Is Bitcoin legal in my country?

Rules can differ for possession, trading, payments, mining and financial promotion. The three colours are a narrow editorial guide to the specific sources below, reviewed 2026-09-24, not a universal “friendly versus hostile” score. Check the original regulator before acting. Grey means not reviewed, not banned.

  • EU member states — MiCA provides an EU framework for crypto-asset service providers. Authorisation and consumer-protection requirements apply; this is not a safety endorsement. ESMA · MiCA ↗
  • United States — The March 2025 executive order establishes a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve using eligible forfeited government BTC. This policy signal is not a complete statement of federal or state trading rules. White House · executive order ↗
  • United Kingdom — Crypto businesses carrying out specified activities must register with the FCA under anti-money-laundering rules. Registration is not an endorsement; financial promotion rules also apply. FCA · registration framework ↗
  • Japan — Crypto-asset exchange service providers are subject to FSA registration. Listed assets are not guaranteed or endorsed by the regulator. Japan FSA · registered providers ↗
  • Türkiye — The central bank prohibits using crypto assets in payments. This specific restriction must not be read as a blanket ban on holding Bitcoin. CBRT · payment rules ↗
  • China — The cited notice treats virtual-currency-related business activities as illegal financial activities. This category describes services, not a claim that every form of private possession is criminal. People’s Bank of China · notice 237 ↗

How to use and share this Bitcoin map

Turn each layer on or off, select a country, and zoom in for small regions. “Share” creates a link to the same country and layers, so a friend sees the same context. There is no tracking token or account requirement. The Bitcoin address distribution chart answers a different question: how many addresses cross a balance threshold.

Boundaries and country label points use public-domain Natural Earth data. Borders are illustrative, do not express a political position, and very small territories may not have a shape at this scale. The table includes all country codes reported by the crawler.
