How do technologies become ordinary?
Place Bitcoin beside the history of internet access and mobile communication. Explore the available trajectories while seeing exactly what each line counts.

What a fair technology comparison needs
First choose the question. Do you want to compare elapsed years, a share of population, infrastructure or financial activity? A calendar-year chart and a years-since-baseline chart answer different questions. Changing the starting threshold can change which technology appears faster.
The interactive panel states the coverage and baseline of each series. A normalized value expresses change from a starting observation; it does not turn addresses, subscriptions or transactions into an equivalent number of adopters.
Internet users and mobile subscriptions
Internet usage estimates describe people who used the internet within the source’s reference period. Mobile subscriptions count subscriptions, which can exceed one per person. Countries have different measurement histories, and recent estimates may be revised.
A global percentage should use a documented global aggregate or a clearly defined population-weighted calculation. Averaging country percentages without weights would give small and large populations the same influence.
Bitcoin has no worldwide user register
The Bitcoin proxies here are the annual mean of daily unique addresses used and the cumulative number of confirmed transactions at year-end, from Blockchain.com. Self-custody, custodial exchanges, multiple wallets and Lightning make a worldwide count of unique Bitcoin users difficult. Public activity cannot solve identity; neither of these series is a verified holder count.
Bitcoin’s history is also shorter than the histories of internet access and mobile telephony. Matching early curve shapes cannot establish the future path, saturation level or economic value of any technology.
How to use the comparison responsibly
Compare several periods and read the underlying units before sharing a screenshot. Look for sustained changes rather than one striking crossing. A chart of adoption is not a Bitcoin price target. For questions about infrastructure geography, continue to the Bitcoin world map ↗.
