A Bitcoin block contains transactions and a reference to the previous block. Miners compete to find a valid proof of work. BTC Campfire displays the height of the latest block reported by its public data sources.
Why there is no countdown
Ten minutes is an average, not a schedule. Blocks can arrive close together or take much longer. A timer promising the exact arrival of the next block would be misleading.
What happens when a block arrives?
When a higher block is detected after the initial connection, the fire flares and its block number appears. With sound enabled, a restrained low tone accompanies the moment. Loading the page does not pretend that the current historical block just arrived.
Sources and limitations
The primary block feed is mempool.space, with Blockstream as a fallback. Price data is from Kraken, with Coinbase as a fallback. Data can be delayed or unavailable. This artwork is not a full explorer or confirmation service, and a recently found block can be replaced in a chain reorganization.
